The project developed for the S. Giuliano junction in Venice has set the goal of integrating the functional aspects with considerations related to the pre-existing environments and road space considered as internal, in the perception and behavior of the direct user, and as external, in the perception of the artifact in the landscape, a further factor of modification.
The constraints imposed on the road geometry, the maintenance of the functionality of the existing node, the location of the junctions, as well as the predetermined support points in comparison with the existing infrastructural bundle, have led to the proliferation of figurative elements and everything seems to allude more to the difficulty of insertion than to the organicity of the solution. In the predictions related to the second part of the project, the project finds a natural development that brings to a conclusion the road solutions and the landscape connections with the surroundings. The introduction of a traffic circle along Via della Libertà allows to optimally serve the planned parking lot, offers an opportune slowing down of the speed at the entrance of the junction, realizes the connection between Venice and the parking lot or the connection with Marghera, allows from the parking lot the return towards Padova, thus contributing to decongest this traffic component also in the ring road. The parking lot finds an optimal functional solution without renouncing to a meaningful landscape arrangement.
In this second phase also the existing artifact dedicated to the transit of the streetcar can be absorbed by the earthworks giving back to the ramps a sort of natural course, while inside it is proposed to realize a small building of support to the parking and above all to the intermodal node that can be configured. The whole of the elements considered configures therefore a total solution that introduces some factors of viability improvement and emphasizes the characters of the conformity to the landscape of the plan through one greater simplification and pregnancy of the figurative elements. The crossing of the junction, characterized by retaining walls, escarpments, the constant presence of the green, therefore, assumes those characters of threshold that from an environment mainly characterized by big manufactures suddenly opens towards places mainly characterized by the presence of water and by the dilatation of the space of the lagoon.
